Whores - Ruiner [2011]
Whores - Ruiner
[Self - Release, 2011]
genre: noise rock, stoner, sludge
Album review by Astronaut
Do you like headbanging while smashing all of the material environment around you? Then you will also like Whores. Ruiner is the first album of Whores a noisy rock trio from Atlanta. Each of the five tracks is a killer one. The chemical reaction is pretty simple. Christian Lembach’s screaming vocals + straight noisy rock = alien heavy homogeneous sound + energy that pull out your guts out through your mouth. No need to refer to each track seperately. Ruiner is solid as a heavy rock shoud be. Whores are asking only 5$ from you. Cheap price for great satisfaction!

Helms Alee - Weatherhead [Hydra Head, 2011]
Helms Alee - Weatherhead
[Hydra Head, 2011]
genre: sludge, noise-rock, post-punk, heavy metal, stoner, post-hardcore
Album Review by Sovereign
“Helms Alee is a Seattle three-piece formed in 2007 by Ben Verellen (Harkonen, Roy, These Arms Are Snakes) and is completed by Dana James and Hozoji Margullis. The band combines heavy rock with melodic arrangements and seems to have an ear for excellent composing. All members of the band exchange lead vocals duties and occasionally teams up for harmonies.” Weatherhead comes on Hydra Head as the previous one ‘Night Terror” of 2008. The band forms a great sludge/noise rock with elements from southern states of America and North American grunge/post-punk style of the past. This band is in my opinion a combination of Melvins, Sonic Youth, Kylesa and Baroness. This is one of the best heavy rock albums of the year. This mix of heaviness, stoner riffs, 70s atmosphere and sludge metal energy brings to my ears one great result that never heard before. Helms Alee is one band that could play what all the above play together , but on the other hand they provide such a melody noone else could provide. If you like Melvins and Sonic Youth this album could be your friend for the summer. Highly recommended to every rock fan.

KEN mode - Venerable [2011]
KEN mode - Venerable
[Profound Lore, 2011]
genre: hardcore, sludge, mathcore, noise-rock, heavy, hardcore
Album Review by Sovereign
“Kurt Ballou of Converge on production, KEN mode pummel your brain with feedback, killer distorted riffs and dynamics that keep everything heavy and threatening”. The Canadians with Thérèse Lanz from Mares of Thrace (one of my last years picks) create a fabulous metal with noise bursts and technical hardcore paths. Just give your time to these live this experience. I believe that this album is well described as a music experience for fans of Pissed jeans, burst, buried inside, Mares of thrace, keelhaul, Tombs, the dillinger escape plan, Converge, Daughters and the Locust. This album is full of energy and heaviness, but there is no lack of melody and inspiration. I think it could be among some of the best sludge/hardcore albums. Matthewson brothers create great albums all these years. Just take this one with you and you are going to spend some great days!!! It is heavy and so damn good. FANTASTIC

The United Sons of Toil - When the Revolution Comes, Everything Will be Beautiful [2011]
The United Sons of Toil - When the Revolution Comes, Everything Will be Beautiful
[Phratry, 2011]
genre: post-hardcore, math rock, noise rock
Album review by Goresonic
The United Sons of Toil are a three membered band from Madison, Wisconsin. “When the Revolution Comes, Everything Will be Beautiful” is their third release and the first one that I’ve heard. Their first release, “Hope is Not a Strategy”, was released in 2007 and was followed by “Until Lions Have Their Historians, Tales of the Hunt Shall Always Glorify the Hunter” the next year. Their music, as they said, is influenced by the noise and math rock that “bubbled up from the Midwest during the mid ’90s”. With their lyrics they are doing a serious political commentary that only Dead Kennedys had made before. This means that in order to have a full opinion about them you have to start by reading the lyrics of each song and their liner notes first and then listen to their music. So starting from the lyrics, United Sons of Toil set some main points for a bigger discussion over the way that human beings react or have to react in order to fundamentally change the way that capitalism overreacts over society. The quote “Fundamental societal change can emerge only through radical individual change”,that they use to describe their album, is a starting point for proper revolution in action. Musically,USoT are great too. Their music is a mix of math rock, noise rock and post-hardcore. They remind me of bands such as Fugazi, Rites of Spring, Neurosis and Unwound. There are a lot of good momemts in their music. Their anger is expressed with some awesome guitar riffs and violent drums. The opener “Alcoholism in the Former Soviet Republics” and “ The Concept of the Urban Guerrilla ” (my personal favourite song) are songs that noise rock and post-hardcore / post-metal fans will really appreciate. But there are some other interesting moments in this album – the doom metal introduction in “Operation Cast Lead”, the aggressive guitar riffs and the screaming vocals on “The Shining Death”, the post-punk / post-hardcore ending song “ State-Sponsored Terrorism”. To sum up, “When the Revolution Comes, Everything Will be Beautiful” is an album that combines very interesting and mature political opinion with great heavy rock music. I recommend this album to every fan of the genres mentioned above even if they haven’t this revolutionary feeling that these guys have.

And so I Watch you from Afar – Gangs
[Richter Collective, 2011]
genre: experimental rock, instrumental, post-rock, noise-rock, avant-prog, math rock
Album Review by Sovereign
Just read what I’ve mentioned in the review for their previous full-lenght release of 2009 . There is no much to say. Just that they are a bit more mature and their music is more inspirational and sometimes really sensational. Also last year’s Ep the release was another great work. This album is fucking awesome. Their post-rock is of course heavier than 2 years ago and their attitude is really technical and math. Progressive ideas and space rock sounds combined with excellent guitar scapes. Some tracks you listen in here, you can never find in somewhere else. There is no other band such these Irish guys. Melody and noise, punk and rock, art and experimental. For sure one of the best post-rock releases of the year. Maybe the best experimental rock release of the last 2 years. I don’t know if they are more modern than other or they follow their inspiration and influences but I think that they are great. I heard that they do have great live performances in their bio and I hope to see them around. Great album. One of the best.

Swear jar – Cuss [2010]
Swear jar – Cuss
[Phratry, 2010]
genre: math rock, noise rock , post-hardcore
Album review by Goresonic
“Cuss” is the debut release from these Cincinnati based “sound killers” named Swear Jar. It’s another great release from Phratry Records that reminds me of noise rock and post-hardcore bands of the 90’s. “Cuss” combines Shellac’s and Jesus Lizard’s noise-screaming rock with Fugazi’s post-punk attitude. All the songs in “Cuss” are really heavy. This album produces different feelings to the audience: sometimes makes the listener wanna headbang and sometimes it makes him wanna scream and act violently. Swear Jar with “Cuss” share their passion about noise and hardcore. They tried to find new ideas in order to apply them in their heavy hardcore rock.I believe that people that are not used in this kind of music won’t like “Cuss” but I’m 100% sure that funs of Shellac’s post hardcore or Minutemen’s Post-Punk will appreciate Swear Jar’s effort.

MALA IN SE is a frenzied detour from the normal world of rock and metal. The band de-constructs concepts from a large cache of musical genres, yet they’ve concocted a truly unique sound and vision. Great band which record this album in 2010 and Phratry Records release it on a CD on spring 2011.
