SO THIS IS CHRISTMAS!!!!
“It took a lot of guts and attitude for four elves to stand up to the Fascist regime of North Pole dictator Nicholas Claus. The three stole a reindeer and a sleigh and left behind the long nights of slaving in the toy factory for the “Fat Man”. They had to get the word out about the real “Spirit Of Christmas”, but how? Their answer was a pair as unorthodox as you could imagine. A guitar slinging, boozed up snowman named Mr. Coalfire and, would you believe, the degenerate half brother of the oppresor himself. Dick Claus (Or Saint Dick if you prefer). Dick was frustrated with how his brother was running the whole Christmas racket and decided to help the elves in their quest. Coalfire was just an angry drunk who got kicked out of the North Pole. The six finally got together and decided that the best way to get the true message of Christmas out to the masses was to write their own words to punk rock classics. Conveniently, this help with their rampant anger issues as well. The Angry Snowmans are here to tell you that Christmas isn’t about buying shit and it sure as hell isn’t about Jesus… It’s about getting drunk, stuffing your face and having fun with your friends… THAT’S IT!!”

Helms Alee - Weatherhead [Hydra Head, 2011]

Helms Alee - Weatherhead
[Hydra Head, 2011]
genre: sludge, noise-rock, post-punk, heavy metal, stoner, post-hardcore
Album Review by Sovereign

“Helms Alee is a Seattle three-piece formed in 2007 by Ben Verellen (Harkonen, Roy, These Arms Are Snakes) and is completed by Dana James and Hozoji Margullis. The band combines heavy rock with melodic arrangements and seems to have an ear for excellent composing. All members of the band exchange lead vocals duties and occasionally teams up for harmonies.” Weatherhead comes on Hydra Head as the previous one ‘Night Terror” of 2008. The band forms a great sludge/noise rock with elements from southern states of America and North American grunge/post-punk style of the past. This band is in my opinion a combination of Melvins, Sonic Youth, Kylesa and Baroness. This is one of the best heavy rock albums of the year. This mix of heaviness, stoner riffs, 70s atmosphere and sludge metal energy brings to my ears one great result that never heard before. Helms Alee is one band that could play what all the above play together , but on the other hand they provide such a melody noone else could provide. If you like Melvins and Sonic Youth this album could be your friend for the summer. Highly recommended to every rock fan.

The Decline of Western Civilization 1981 (VHS)

The Decline of Western Civilization
[Media Home Entertainment, Nu Image Films, 1981]
Documantary Movie about punk, hardcore

The Decline of Western Civilization is an American documentary film filmed through 1979 and 1980. The movie was directed by Penelope Spheeris about the Los Angeles punk rock scene. In 1981, the LAPD Chief of Police Daryl Gates wrote a letter demanding the film not be shown again in L.A. Over the years the film has gained cult status.
The film’s title is possibly a reference to famous music critic Lester Bangs’ 1970 two-part review of The Stooges’ Fun House for Creem magazine, where Bangs quotes a friend who had said the popularity of The Stooges signaled “the decline of Western civilization.” Another possibility is that the title refers to Darby Crash’s reading of Oswald Spengler’s Der Untergang des Abendlandes (The Decline of the West).
The film is the opening act of a trilogy by Spheeris depicting life in Los Angeles at various points. The second film covers the Los Angeles heavy metal scene of 1986-1988. The third film chronicles the gutter punk lifestyle of homeless teenagers in the late 1990s.

Black Lips – Arabia Mountain [2011]

Black Lips – Arabia Mountain
[Vice, 2011]
genre: garage rock, garage punk, lo-fi
album review by Goresonic

“Arabia Mountain is Black Lips’ sixth full length album. In this album, these garage-rockers from Atlanta continue playing their special garage-punk, garage rock and soul music mixture as well, but this time I feel that they seem more fresh than they were 2 years ago with “200 Million Thousand”. From the first time I listened to “Arabia Mountain” I felt that I was participating in a fucking amazing r’n’r summer beach party. Usually, in a 16 song garage-rock album you get bored after a while, but Black lips didn’t allow me to get bored with all these happy, inteligent and energetic music ideas. I really enjoyed this album and I strongly believe that every garage and r’n’r fan will like it as well. These guys are made to play r’n’r music and they’re doing it very very well.
Best Tracks:”Family Tree”, “Raw Meat”, “Time”, “Don’t Mess Up My Baby”
